Rathbone Street & Hanway Place Consultation

1/2

Rathbone Street, Rathbone Place and Hanway Place Consultation

The Oxford Street scheme aims to enhance the public realm of Oxford Street while improving safety, accessibility and comfort. Traffic changes to Rathbone Street, Rathbone Place, Hanway Street and Hanway Place will enable traffic and public realm improvements to Oxford Street without displacing traffic onto neighbouring streets.

The Oxford Street Programme, in collaboration with Camden Council, proposes the following traffic changes:

  • Reverse motor traffic to northbound only on Rathbone Place. This enables the proposed Oxford Street access restriction between Rathbone Place and Tottenham Court Road, allowing any vehicles to turn off Oxford Street to avoid the restriction. Traffic flows are expected to be similar to existing volumes;

  • Reverse motor traffic to southbound only on Rathbone Street to maintain local vehicle access to the local area given the reversal of Rathbone Place (otherwise the only vehicle access route to the street would be via Oxford St and Rathbone Pl.);

  • Allow cycling in both directions on Rathbone Place and Rathbone Street to maintain connectivity and permeability for cyclists;

  •  Extend access restrictions from Oxford Street onto Hanway Street (western end only). Hanway Street will continue to be one-way eastbound but vehicle access will be restricted as a result of the restrictions on Oxford Street which feeds Hanway Street. The Oxford Street restrictions will be buses, taxis and bicycles only 7am – 7pm, with access for delivery vehicles to be permitted only 7am – midday). This means the general traffic can only access Hanway Street and Hanway Place from Tottenham Court Road 7am-7pm but could also access these streets via Oxford Street outside of these hours.

  • Reverse traffic flow on Hanway Place to maintain 24/7 vehicle access to this street and Hanway Street (currently vehicle access is from the western end of Hanway Street, but this would be subject to the Oxford Street vehicle access restriction 7am-7pm).
